The oil change schedule is much different for personal or light-duty vehicles than it is for large, commercial, or heavy-duty trucks. For light-duty vehicles, the oil should be changed about every 5,000 miles. For heavy-duty trucks like semis, the oil will have a functional life expectancy of 10,000 to 25,000 miles.
How often you should change your oil filter has a spectrum of answers. Some prefer to change the filter every other oil change, and others prefer to change the filter with every oil change. Neither one is incorrect and the right choice for you depends on your personal risk tolerance and driving habits.
Many oil filter manufacturers recommend changing the filter out every other oil change. In theory, if you are getting your oil changed on schedule, it won’t have a chance to become dirty enough between changes to pose a clogging hazard. If you have an older vehicle or have more time between oil changes, you may want to consider a new filter with each oil change.
